Transliteration

In short and in plain language

A transliteration swaps letters that a program does not know for other letters.

For example, Ä becomes AE. The name can still be read, but it is not quite the same.

So it fits a parcel label better. In the stored data, the name stays as it is.

Definition
A transliteration renders letters that a system does not know with other letters, such as Ł as L or Ä as AE. The name stays readable but is no longer exactly the same. It is therefore better suited to outputs such as parcel labels than to stored master data.
