CMR
Abbreviation for Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road
In short and in plain language
The CMR is a treaty between many countries.
It applies to contracts for moving goods by road across borders.
It covers rights, duties and who is liable for loss. An extra part also deals with a digital consignment note.
Definition
The CMR is the Convention of 19 May 1956 on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road; the abbreviation comes from its French title. It governs the civil-law relationships in the international carriage of goods by road, for example the rights and obligations of the parties and liability. An additional protocol of 20 February 2008 concerns the electronic consignment note.
